What we look for

Four readings, per kitchen.

The masthead confirms with each kitchen before a dish is tagged. Notes are published per plate, so you can read the work behind the badge.

N° 001 · Source

Documented at the supplier.

Every halal-tagged plate carries a noted protein source — the supplier name on file, and the certifying body where one is in use. Verbal-only is not enough.

N° 002 · Kitchen vs. dish

Whole menu, or one plate.

Some kitchens source halal across the whole menu; others do it on specific plates. Both are surfaced, tagged clearly, so you can pick the room you want.

N° 003 · The room

A kitchen worth the trip.

We don't list the nearest halal option as a default. We list the plate the masthead would cross town for — halal first, but never only.

N° 004 · Freshness

Re-checked each season.

Suppliers change. Menus change. The masthead re-confirms sourcing each season, and pulls the tag the moment a kitchen can't substantiate it.

Common questions

Asked, answered.

01

How does theBEAT verify halal sourcing?

Each halal-tagged dish requires a documented source on the protein. The masthead confirms with the kitchen — supplier name, certifying body where applicable, and which plates on the menu qualify. Notes are published per dish.

02

What's the difference between a halal kitchen and a halal dish?

A halal kitchen sources all proteins halal across the menu. A halal dish is one specific plate at a mixed kitchen. Both surface on theBEAT, tagged so you can choose.

03

Which neighborhoods are covered?

DC's seven quadrants, plus Bethesda, Silver Spring, Rockville, Arlington, Alexandria, and Baltimore. Coverage grows weekly.

04

Is the halal filter free?

Yes. All religious, dietary, and medical filters are free on every tier of theBEAT, including the free plan. No upgrade required.

05

Can I see only halal dishes on the rankings?

Yes. Toggle the Halal chip on the Rankings screen. The list rebuilds dish by dish, with the masthead's verification note attached to each.
